That Christian Science heals both sin and disease and therefore brings freedom and salvation to mankind can be proved by any impartial, sincere investigator of this religion. My first experience with Christian Science was when I received a healing of the smoking and social drinking habits through reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which had been borrowed from the public library. Since then many other healings have been experienced; some were instantaneous, others required some time. A Christian Science practitioner was occasionally engaged, but at other times the healing resulted from my own demonstration of the truth.
On one occasion, in line with my official duties as president of a certain active state organization, I had called a meeting in a city some distance away. As the meeting date drew near I was confined to a sickbed and dispatched word to those in charge to that effect. A Christian Science practitioner was helping me, however, and I was expecting a healing. On the afternoon of the day of the meeting I awoke from a peaceful sleep with a feeling of perfect harmony and freedom. I therefore arose from my bed and left to attend the meeting, a hundred miles away, returning at a very late hour. The healing was so complete that no one present would have known, had he not been told, that I had just previously been painfully confined to my bed.
I was also privileged to prove to the organization that one does not need to drink or smoke to make and keep friends. Although during these years as an officer of this organization I never indulged in liquor or in the use of tobacco, yet I held the most harmonious relationship with the officers and with the membership as a whole. One of them once remarked that my soberness would always assure the ship would be kept afloat.
