Poems

At the Red Sea

From the January 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The land of Goshen stirred beneath the rod.
Through Moses we were learning more each day
About our loving Shepherd—Father, God.
We watched the many plagues come one by one,
We bent to make the bricks, to dig the clay,
And yet we seemed to dwell above the storm.
We saw the saving of the eldest son
On that last night in Egypt. Soon the word
Came sweeping through the villages to form
To follow God into the wilderness.
The grouping of the mighty crowd was heard,
Their numbers more than any man could guess.

Last evening found us camped beside the sea.
The host of Egypt filled our hearts with fear;
There seemed no hope. What could the answer be?
As moments passed, our faith and courage grew.
Assuring words from Moses we could hear
Throughout the whispering camp: Fear not. Stand still
And ye shall see the Lord deliver you....
Go forward now. Then Moses raised his rod,
The sea swept back and dried away until
A perfect pathway cleared. At last I know
That he who trusts shall walk ahead with God
And shall be safe wherever he may go.
