THE REGENERATING EFFECT OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the January 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

How perfectly our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, describes what Christian Science does when she says in "Miscellaneous Writings"(p. 22), "Christian Science translates Mind, God, to mortals."

In giving Christian Science to mankind Mrs. Eddy has not only revealed what is absolutely true regarding God and man in His image and likeness, but has also shown mankind how these truths can be applied in human experience to bring about regeneration and healing. While the first chapter of the opening book of the Bible records that God made man in His own image and likeness, and both the Old and the New Testament have many references to the fact that God is good and that He is Spirit, these truths alone have not brought out in any great degree the spiritual healing and moral regeneration needed to bless humanity. Through the centuries many good men and women have truly longed to emulate Jesus' perfect example of the Science of being but have made little progress in so doing. Mrs. Eddy, through her published writings, has shown mankind how to follow Jesus in thought and deed.

It is recorded in the thirteenth chapter of Matthew that Jesus used a parable to illustrate what constitutes human consciousness. The seeming mingling of false material sense and spiritual sense he likened to a field in which destructive weeds known as tares appeared, as well as the wheat from the good seed which was sown. A careful reading of this parable and of the explanation of it given to his disciples by Jesus shows that the Master did not advocate the destruction of all that was in the field. The tares, or evils, were to be wisely destroyed, but the products of the good seed were to be gathered into the barn; that is, the eternal, Godlike qualities seen in humanity are to be recognized as permanent, belonging to God's idea, man.
