"THE CHRISTIANLY SCIENTIFIC MAN"

From the January 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"The Christianly scientific man reflects the divine law, thus becoming a law unto himself." These words by Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 458) are replete with meaning to the earnest student of Christian Science. For he learns early in his study that to be a "Christianly scientific man," as exemplified by Christ Jesus, is not only the way to gain dominion over oneself and one's affairs, but the inevitable necessity of every individual.

That Jesus was the Founder of Christianity is an undisputed fact. That he healed the sick, cast out sin, walked over the waves, and overcame death for himself and others through the power of God in defiance of physical laws is also generally recognized. But that he accomplished these deeds scientifically is not so readily perceived, despite his own consistent success and his expectation that all men would be able to follow his example, as is evidenced in his words (Mark 16:15–18): "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.... And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."

Christian Science recognizes that Jesus' works were accomplished through his scientific understanding of God as divine Spirit, Life, Truth, Love, Mind, and of man as His reflection. This Science reveals that man is not a mortal material being subject to physical laws or the vagaries of evil and chance; he is spiritual and perfect, governed by divine law. Science repudiates entirely the reality of matter and evil, averring that they have only a supposititious existence in human consciousness and disappear in proportion as spiritual facts are understood and demonstrated.
