THE DESERT ROAD TO THE PROMISED LAND

From the January 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

God's guiding hand is always near us. Humility enables us to discern it. Faith in good makes it easy for us to obey it. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, describes the compelling power of Love's guidance when she tells us in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 559): "The inaudible voice of Truth is, to the human mind, 'as when a lion roareth.' It is heard in the desert and in dark places of fear." The only demand which Truth makes on us is that we shall heed this voice. Christian Science shows us how.

Our beloved Leader unfailingly sought God's guidance. It is related that when she visited the original edifice of The Mother Church for the first time she stood behind one of the Readers' desks and repeated these lines of a familiar hymn:

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah!
Pilgrim through this barren land:
I am weak, but Thou art mighty,
Hold me with Thy powerful hand.
