While economy is often thought of in the narrow sense which suggests parsimony, in its true, scientific meaning it includes no hint of lack. Rather does it imply wise stewardship. It is synonymous with order, care, and conservation. It links wisdom with brotherly love, and our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, assures us that it should characterize all our actions.
True economy is the law of wisdom and Love in operation. It is the law of supply and demand in perfect balance. Because this law is concerned only with true substance, or Spirit, it knows no extremes. It includes neither extravagance nor deprivation. As demonstrated in Christian Science it is the ever-operative law of divine Love adequately and wisely meeting the human need. Under this law there is never too much nor too little of anything; hence there is no waste and no want. While this law is divine, like every other law of God it must be obeyed and made practical in human experience.
Since the real and only man is the spiritual child of God, he is heir to all that the Father has. As God's reflection he possesses abundant health, wealth, and joy. His income is boundless, for its source is in Spirit. It is inconceivable that the idea of infinite Love should be limited in any way. Infinity precludes limitation, and Love excludes lack. Yet if we would prove worthy of our stewardship of God's bounty we must see that we practice economy in all the minutiae of our daily affairs. To be truly economical is to manage successfully without waste. It is to regulate in a purposeful and practical manner every situation as it arises. In proportion as we look away from matter and persons to God as the source of our income and exercise wisdom in our dealings with others do we become conscious of our inheritance from our heavenly Father and experience the safety and peace of God's law of economy.
