Testimonies of Healing

I was reared in a Christian home where...

From the January 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I was reared in a Christian home where I was taught to love God, and when quite young I became a member of an orthodox church. But when my husband passed on, leaving me with four children, I found myself seeking God's presence in vain; He seemed so near, yet so far away. I owned my home, as well as other property, and later on I married again, feeling that I had found help to sustain me. But after two years all that I held most dear appeared to be slipping away, including my home, my property, and my husband. I loved my children very dearly, but there seemed little else to live for.

One morning a neighbor came to my house to telephone to a Christian Science practitioner for her mother. She noticed my unhappiness and explained something about Christian Science to me. Also she said that she had some authorized literature which I could have if I wanted it. I immediately sent for it, and while I was reading the testimonies of healing, my ten-months-old baby was healed of a very stubborn case of constipation. This was proof enough for me; I at once accepted the great revelation of the perfection of God and man which my neighbor had told me about. Through the consecrated work of a practitioner my home was re-established in a way that had before seemed humanly impossible.

In July, 1940, my eldest son enlisted in the United States Navy. In May, 1942, I expected him home, but instead he was sent with the First Marine Division to Guadalcanal in the Pacific islands. His personal belongings were sent to me, and when the man delivered them to my door I asked him when my son would arrive home. Then it dawned upon me that he was being sent overseas. After a moment I said aloud, "I don't know where he is; but I do know that wherever he is, God is there." I went to my work that evening, holding to the ninety-first Psalm as well as I could and striving to cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Not until four months later did I know my son's whereabouts. It is impossible to express my gratitude for the help Christian Science gave me during those months.
