Testimonies of Healing

I wish to express my gratitude for Christian Science...

From the January 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I wish to express my gratitude for Christian Science and for a healing which I received recently of a growth on my body which had been there since early childhood. It came to me that unnatural growths do not belong to man, the image and likeness of Spirit, God. I did quite a bit of work in Christian Science, thinking of Mary Baker Eddy's statement on page 463 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she writes, "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive."

The first part of the sentence, "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error," seemed to me to be a statement of absolute Christian Science, signifying that right then I was in reality a perfect idea in Mind without any material accompaniment. Then the second part of the sentence, I reasoned, must be a relative statement, the application of this divine truth to the human consciousness: "this truth removes properly whatever is offensive." If I accepted the first part of the statement, that I was a perfect spiritual idea, then the offensive thing to remove would be a mortal mind suggestion that I was an imperfect mortal, subject to an outlaw growth of cell tissue.

In setting about to correct this erroneous supposition, I knew that in the wholeness of man's unity with God there is nothing extraneous; so error could not come from without and attach itself to my real selfhood in any shape whatever. It could have no root in Principle, no power to inflate itself, no adhesion, cohesion, or attraction by which to attach itself. Mrs. Eddy says in the textbook (p. 124), "Adhesion, cohesion, and attraction are properties of Mind." I knew that these properties of divine Mind could not be used by inanimate matter. Therefore, the error could have no real foothold.
