Christ Jesus claimed his unity with God. He said (John 10:30), "I and my Father are one." This is a statement he proved throughout his earthly existence. Although living in the world and surrounded by worldly conditions, he was so conscious of the unity that exists between God and man that he was clearly aware of the realm of spiritual consciousness.
It was his conscious union with God that enabled him to do the healing works. Had he not been aware of man's relationship to the Father he would not have been able to claim it for others and thus release them from the shackles of sin, sickness, disease, and death.
Mary Baker Eddy followed the Master in the way. Through the study of his teachings and practice she learned his method of healing. She discerned the necessity of constantly claiming and living in unity with Spirit, and her way of life was to demonstrate spiritual existence. In the unity of God and man she found the works of early Christianity repeated in her own experience. She then set out to establish the Church of Christ, Scientist. In the Manual of The Mother Church by our Leader we read (p. 17), "At a meeting of the Christian Scientist Association, April 12, 1879, on motion of Mrs. Eddy, it was voted,—To organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing."
