As I look back over my past ten years in Christian Science, gratitude floods my thought, for my blessings have been many. Shortly after my induction into the armed forces, just prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, I was taken suddenly ill at basic training camp with a condition of spinal meningitis and lobar pneumonia so grave that the family was summoned to my bedside. I was unacquainted with Christian Science at the time.
When my brother, a new student of Christian Science, saw the situation he went to the Christian Science Camp Welfare Worker. After hearing an explanation of the circumstances the Worker immediately went to work metaphysically, silently and audibly declaring the truth and affirming God's law of the eternal perfection of man. Shortly afterward I was introduced to this Worker. He talked to me about Christian Science and read a few passages from "Prayer," the first chapter of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. His explanation of Truth was clear, gentle, and truly inspirational; and I began to take an earnest interest in Christian Science. Simultaneously my physical condition began to improve.
For several weeks the Worker visited me frequently, each day telling me more about Christian Science and its wonderful healing power, which progressively manifested itself in my physical condition. A few weeks later the Army medical authorities had me transferred to a large Army hospital in an eastern city. The loving help of a practitioner was secured in this city, and I had frequent visits. Each day my grasp on the truth grew stronger as I constantly reaffirmed my status of perfect health, and I was returned to duty with my unit in two months, completely free.
