During my school days friends took me occasionally to a Church of Christ, Scientist. There the atmosphere of joy and the testimonies at the Wednesday evening meetings made a deep impression on me, and I hoped that I might some day become a student of Christian Science. The fulfillment of this desire some years later, though it followed a harsh experience, has proved to be the greatest blessing of my life.
After I had suffered for many months from a severe nervous breakdown the thought grew insistent that Christian Science offered my only hope of ever rising above that condition. Eventually the decision was reached to have Christian Science treatment, and a practitioner lovingly took my case. Four days later enough progress had been made for me to resume my work, which had been quite impossible for me to do a week earlier. Although there were many more struggles with various physical and mental symptoms, especially fear and discouragement, the erroneous conditions yielded one by one until in a few months I found myself happier, healthier, and freer than ever before.
When I first began to read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and other authorized Christian Science literature, to my dismay almost all of it seemed an unintelligible jumble of words; but the meaning of the testimonies was clear enough, and they encouraged me to persist. If others had learned to understand this subject and had been healed, so could I, it seemed to me. By the time the healing related above was complete I had gained some spiritual understanding of God and of man as His beloved child. Life then began to take on an entirely new meaning with this understanding as its foundation.
