Testimonies of Healing

[Original testimony in French]

In acknowledging my debt of gratitude...

From the April 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In acknowledging my debt of gratitude to God I wish to submit this testimony. One evening I noticed that my daughter was hoarse. Her condition quickly grew worse, and about ten o'clock in the evening she seemed to be suffocating. I was alone and tried to realize the truth as well as I could, but my efforts were without success. My fear became great, for the child could scarcely breathe. Since the doctor was our nearest neighbor, error suggested that I call him. As I left the room I saw lying on a table the copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy which I had been reading. I stopped with a last hope, and my glance fell on this inspiring passage (p.218): "If you do believe in God, why do you substitute drugs for the Almighty's power, and employ means which lead only into material ways of obtaining help, instead of turning in time of need to God, divine Love, who is an ever-present help?"

My faith was put to the test. I had to choose either medicine or the power of the Almighty. My faith in God prevailed. I clung to the message I had read in that hour of distress, putting myself entirely in God's hands. Momentarily I forgot about my child. When I went back to her the rasping cough had stopped, and she was sleeping peacefully. This was to me a beautiful demonstration of God's answer to prayer, and how deeply grateful to Him I was for it.

I should like to mention another proof of divine power. Our granddaughter, when several months old, was sleeping in a room somewhat distant from the kitchen, where I was working. Her bed was covered with a mosquito netting. The child awakened and began to cry; but being busy, I did not go to her right away. When I did go into the room I heard a feeble wailing. She had twisted the netting around her face and was half smothered. When I took her in my arms I thought she was passing on. Terrified, I called my husband and said, "We must declare the truth with all our hearts." We then repeated aloud several times "the scientific statement of being" (ibid., p. 468). I did not dare to look at the child as I held her in my arms but raised my eyes imploringly in prayer. For several minutes there was no change; then gradually she showed signs of life. She remained very limp the rest of the day, but the next day and thereafter her health was normal. The experience was one of the most beautiful and remarkable demonstrations of healing I have witnessed.
