When I was a small child I heard my parents speak of an uncle and aunt who were Christian Scientists and who never took medicine because they believed they could be healed by God. I thought how wonderful it would be if my parents believed likewise, because then I would not be compelled to take the many and varied potions which were recommended by physicians at that time.
Later I noticed that opinions of medical science regarding suitable remedies for mankind's ailments changed as the years went by and that favorite prescriptions were discarded faster than fashion's latest modes. One drug that was considered beneficial in my childhood was condemned later as a poison, I began to lose faith in material remedies of any kind.
I entered a period of doubt, in which belief in a good and wise God could not be reconciled with material evidences of wickedness, suffering, and death, it was at this time that Christian Science found me. Upon learning that a neighbor was attending Christian Science services, I asked for some literature, saying that I wanted to see if there was anything in it to help my mother-in-law, who was a semi-invalid. The neighbor lovingly let me borrow her copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and some copies of lectures and periodicals.
