Twenty-five years ago, while I was living in a small town where Christian Science was unknown, my sister sent me the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, saving that people were healed through the study of Christian Science. As I read it I found myself agreeing entirely with its teachings. Nervous indigestion and chronic headaches soon disappeared from my experience. I then realized the efficacy of the healing truths contained in the textbook, and I took it with me wherever I went.
When my three-year-old son was taken ill with a fever, I prayerfully turned to Science and Health. As I took it up it opened at page 37(), where a marginal heading reads, "Remedy for fever." I did not remember ever having read this before, but the words seemed illumined, and I knew that God had answered my prayer. The child fell asleep as I continued to read, and in about thirty minutes he awakened completely well. This is but one of many healings accomplished for us solely through the study of the textbook.
I had undergone an unsuccessful major operation for a gland condition, and a surgeon had told me that I should have to undergo another operation for the removal of the gland. There was resentment, self-will, and self-justification in my thought. When I gained some understanding of Christian Science it came to me very clearly that the surgeon's knife could not remove the erroneous beliefs in my consciousness which were causing the need for operations; only the Christ, Truth, could do that.
