THE INFLUENCE OF SPIRIT

From the January 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Speaking to a small boy, a kindly gentleman said, "Sonny, can you tell me where God is:" To which question the lad replied, "Sir, can you tell me where God is not?"

This question as to the ever-presence of Spirit, Christian Science now answers with positive proof. Because, as infinite Mind, God fills all space, the presence of perfect Mind is in reality with all men, whether they are around the conference table, within the church, or facing trial or triumph, temptation or tempest of fear. Certainly God is not visible in any material form. But, as invariable, animating Principle, He is ever available to direct the right thinker in a joyous, upright way. The divine influence of Spirit, Soul, is actually with each one to heal the heart, to beautify, uplift, and inspire the thought with glorious qualities and spiritual ideals.

Yes, God is with us. But, as Christian Science teaches, to understand our unity with Him we need to think of ourselves as we are in reality—not as mortals, dreaming of material existence, but as ideas of perfect Mind, as spiritual identities, reflecting in Godlike qualities this "altogether lovely" influence divine. Through Christian Science we see this power of the Christ-idea proclaiming God as All and man as His wholly spiritual reflection. The Christ is influencing human thought aright; it is leading men out of their false belief in two antagonistic forces, good and evil, Spirit and matter, into the true understanding of one creative Mind and one creation, the immortal universe and man emanating from this Mind.
