This testimony can express only a little of what Christian Science means to me. I began its study in 1919, when my mother enrolled me in a Christian Science Sunday School. Soon afterward chronic digestive disorders were healed. When I learned to express more love, I was freed from feelings of timidity and inferiority which had often made me quite unhappy. The freedom thus attained proved invaluable when I entered the business world, and later when I married and established a home. Over twenty years ago appendicitis was healed in one treatment by a loving practitioner and has never returned.
About ten years ago I developed a tumor. The healing was slow and at first required much help from devoted practitioners. It did not yield completely until there had been much transformation from sense to Soul in my thinking. When I realized that what I needed most was to express humility, I began to progress. Until that time I was not awake to the fact that I was expressing more human than divine good in my activities and that I was really seeking self-satisfaction, self-advancement, and self-aggrandizement.
Then one day I saw clearly that the only real satisfaction lies in recognizing one's spiritual, Godlike self and in loving and expressing it to the glory of God. Two statements from "Miscellaneous Writings" by Mrs. Eddy proved very helpful. The first is (p.354), "Experience shows that humility is the first step in Christian Science, wherein all is controlled, not by man or laws material, but by wisdom, Truth, and Love." The second is (p. 356), "One can never go up, until one has gone down in his own esteem."
