Mary Baker Eddy tells us in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 419), "Your true course is to destroy the foe, and leave the field to God, Life, Truth, and Love, remembering that God and His ideas alone are real and harmonious." How simple and yet how necessary is this instruction! Most of us are ready to "destroy the foe," but are we as ready to "leave the field to God"? Are we not, rather, inclined to insist on some false human responsibility?
If we are to "leave the field to God," we must necessarily have an understanding of the true nature of God. In Christian Science this understanding comprises the demonstrable fact that God, Spirit, Truth, is in reality the only presence and power. There is none other. Christian Science teaches that this is the only conclusion that is consistent with the allness and oneness of God. If this were not so, there would be no absolute, invariable Principle, or creator, expressing itself in a complete and perfect creation. Christian Science healing would then be a myth instead of an actual experience.
Jesus fully realized the allness and omnipotence of God, and was ever ready to "leave the field to God." This is clear from his well-known words (John 5:30), "I can of mine own self do nothing," and from his statement (verse 17), "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work." God needed no help from Jesus, and needs none from us, to maintain His perfect creation. As Christian Science makes clear, the power which heals the sick and the love which comforts the sorrowing are of divine, not human, origin.
