The law of God is as operative in the world today as it was centuries ago, and it is being demonstrated by Christian Scientists in healing, protection, and regeneration. The miracles which the Bible records are understood in Christian Science to be natural, not supernatural, and to evidence the constant operation of divine law. Those who are gaining an understanding of Christian Science are gaining an understanding of God's law and its operation. They no longer look upon the healings they experience and witness as miracles, but as the natural outcome of the operation of true law. Therefore in their daily experience they are feeling its influence.
The original meaning of the word law, according to a dictionary, is "something set, placed, fixed, laid down." Law, then, in the light of Christian Science, is a divine thought-force, and man, the divine image of Mind, is in perfect relation to and in harmony with this law. Mary Baker Eddy defines God's law and the so-called laws of matter in no unmistakable terms when she says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 257): "Law is either a moral or an immoral force. The law of God is the law of Spirit, a moral and spiritual force of immortal and divine Mind. The so-called law of matter is an immoral force of erring mortal mind, alias the minds of mortals."
The law of God is the force of good. Instead of presenting this law as a condemning and destructive force, Jesus, who clearly understood the law of God, presented it as a healing and saving force; and those who follow him must do so also. All the rules of Christian Science are based on the divine law which Jesus utilized—the law of perfect cause and perfect effect, perfect Mind and perfect idea, spiritual substance and spiritual manifestation. The effect has to be in absolute accord, in absolute harmony, with the cause. Whatever appears in cause appears in effect also. Divine law sustains this accord. Divine Mind, acting through its thought-force, produces all ideas, or effects. It produces every true manifestation. God and His creation constitute all real cause and effect. This is all that truly exists.
