THE CHEMISTRY OF SPIRIT

From the November 1954 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In contrast with the elements involved in the practice of material chemistry, those which are primal to Deity exist forever in perfect agreement. These elements, or spiritual qualities, are reflected by God's man in perfect harmony and never result in discordant or destructive complications. When understood, they always evolve in human experience a state of health, harmony, happiness, and success. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy says (p. 512): "From the infinite elements of the one Mind emanate all form, color, quality, and quantity, and these are mental, both primarily and secondarily. Their spiritual nature is discerned only through the spiritual senses." Here is a premise of what might be termed the chemistry of Spirit. Through the action of Mind's elements the human is transformed by the spiritual. The understanding of the divine Mind, Spirit, purifies human consciousness and thereby brings health to the body.

Material chemistry, on the other hand, counterfeits the action of the divine Mind. Its results are sometimes destructive. But there can be no destructive action in divine Science. The result of the chemistry of Spirit must always be benevolent, since the elements of Mind are always in perfect concord by the nature of their source, divine Spirit.

These are important considerations, because they deal effectively with the temptation to believe that progress in Truth must necessarily follow the pattern of material chemical processes. Those may occasionally present useful symbols which point thought upward, but they do not present the means or methods of divine Science, which must necessarily be the result of an understanding of God as divine Spirit, Soul, Principle, and Mind. The chemistry of Spirit transforms the human basis of thinking and living to higher levels of thought. Of this alterative action of Truth, Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 162): "Christian Science brings to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates and purifies. Christian Science acts as an alterative, neutralizing error with Truth. It changes the secretions, expels humors, dissolves tumors, relaxes rigid muscles, restores carious bones to soundness. The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind."
