Many sufferers have come to Christian Science because all other means of restoration had failed. They turned to it as a last resort and found their needs supplied and their problems solved. This transformation or regeneration was brought about by the power of Truth acting upon human belief. This power was seen to be omnipotent, and under the law of God an adjustment to normalcy occurred.
The power of Truth and Love acts like the warmth of the sun which dissolves a dark cloud. Health is a fact in Mind, but disease is an image in mortal thought which the presence of Mind, when understood, obliterates. In order to obtain good results in Christian Science it is just as necessary to follow the rules of this Science as it is in the study of music or mathematics. A simple rule given by the Master is to be found in Matthew (6:33), "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
It is desirable that the one seeking help in Christian Science should turn wholeheartedly to Truth without so much as a backward glance at material methods. Mary Baker Eddy writes in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 167), "Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized." One cannot succeed in Christian Science if he attempts to seek the kingdom of God and at the same time pursues his quest for help by using material methods. He should not attempt to mix spiritual means with medication, hygiene, psychotherapy, psychology, hypnotism, spiritualism, or theosophy. There must be a complete abandonment of trust in material systems. Truth demands our absolute reliance, and good results are obtained in proportion to our loyalty to the rules laid down in the Bible and in the Christian Science textbook.
