OVERCOMING DEATH

From the April 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christ Jesus promised (John 5:24), "He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life." In the face of this glorious promise, how can mankind mutely accept the evidence of death as unavoidable and inevitable? It is only animal magnetism, mesmerism, or ignorance of God which would keep us from demanding of ourselves that we learn the way to overcome death.

Let us look at this promise in the light of Christian Science. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy many times uses Life as a synonym for God, and she also includes Life with six other synonyms for the one God; namely, Principle, Mind, Soul, Spirit, Truth, Love. Then according to Christian Science, since death is the opposite of Life, it must be the opposite of God, the opposite of Principle, Mind, Soul, Spirit, Truth, Love. Since God is All, He can know only His own allness; therefore He cannot know death or any of its claims and symptoms; neither can God's idea, His image and likeness, know a suppositional opposite of Life or Truth or Love.

The offspring of infinite Soul can never be dependent upon finite, limited mortality. Eternal Spirit does not express itself in dying, decaying, aging matter. Truth is always true, is always available and forever expressed, and has no substantial opposition. Love is all-encompassing, divine, deathless Being, expressed in tender loving-kindness and graciousness.
