Students of Christian Science are daily rejoicing that they can learn of God from the inspired Word of the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy and need not be driven to find Him through suffering. However, if the need of mortals does consist of chastenings in order that they may be inspired to advance spiritually, the very action of Christ, Truth, in human consciousness will uncover obstacles to progress and bring to the surface hidden errors that must be overcome in order for one to be blessed, healed, and exalted.
Every falsity in human consciousness must be displaced and replaced with truth; hence, the progress Spiritward that has enabled one to solve one problem brings the ability to grapple with and overcome another problem, until all falsity fades into its nothingness. This joyous activity brings true manhood and womanhood to light.
Mrs. Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, pp. 95, 96), "Humanity advances slowly out of sinning sense into spiritual understanding; unwillingness to learn all things rightly, binds Christendom with chains." Willingness to be taught the lessons necessary to enable one to appreciate the unreality of evil or error and the reality of God, Spirit, and His spiritual creation, is something humanity joyfully gains through the study and application of Christian Science. Rebelling against circumstances that must be altered or problems that must be solved disappears as spiritual good is discerned. Everyone must take many steps Spiritward in order to overcome the belief of life in matter and to recognize himself as the son of God.
