TRANSCENDING MATERIAL SENSE

From the April 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Transcending the evidence of the material senses, Science declares God to be the Soul of all being, the only Mind and intelligence in the universe." To make practical these words by Mary Baker Eddy in "Unity of Good" (p. 29) requires spiritual understanding, which enables one to replace the false evidence of material sense with spiritual truths, to exchange the material senses for the senses of Soul.

Christian Science reveals that the senses of Soul never in any way co-operate with material sense; nor do they depend upon any of the physical senses as necessary contributors to their expression. Limitations lessen and the possibilities for good in human experience increase as mankind looks to God, Soul, for all resources.

The Scriptures tell of spiritual seers who, through obeying the voice of God, were able to rise above some limiting sense of the human mind. One of these was Moses, who rose to spiritual heights in such a remarkable degree that to him the revelations of God were made "mouth to mouth" (Num. 12:8). Mrs. Eddy makes this illuminating statement in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 308): "The Soul-inspired patriarchs heard the voice of Truth, and talked with God as consciously as man talks with man."
