MAN EXPRESSES INTELLIGENCE

From the April 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Mind is not helpless. Intelligence is not mute before non-intelligence." What priceless comfort is there for the mentally limited in these words written by Mary Baker Eddy on page 191 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the Christian Science textbook. In Christian Science, Mind is one of the synonyms used in defining God. The Scriptures inform us that God made man in His image and likeness, in the likeness of Mind, divine intelligence. The world must come to know that God is the only intelligence. If men were willing to be governed by this one statement of fact, they would have all the intelligence they need and mental peace without measure.

The word mind is usually synonymous with brain. The general belief is that each individual has a separate mind capable of influencing, or of being influenced by, other minds and that mind can be limited and incapable.

How far mankind has strayed from the heritage stated in the first chapter of Genesis (verse 27), "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them"! Now is the time for men to return to the teachings of the Bible and claim their spiritual birthright. Mrs. Eddy has made available to us, through her writings, the results of her thorough and inspired study of the Scriptures. Christian Science shows that it is one's ignorance of God which leads one to believe man has a mind separate from God. The belief that there is more than one Mind is the source of all evil and suffering. The understanding that there is only one Mind destroys discord and restores harmony. The need, then, is for mankind to lay aside discordant beliefs in an existence apart from God and to study to know God as the one Mind and man as His image and likeness, as Mind's idea. Paul wrote (Rom. 8:16, 17), "We are the children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ."
