"With God all things are possible," the Bible tells us (Matt. 19:26). Over and over this great truth has proved itself to me. When I was fairly new in the study of Christian Science I was healed of a dislocated jaw. I had been suffering from an extremely painful boil, which caused me to faint and fall off a chair and to strike my jaw. My mother heard the crash and ran to help me. When I regained consciousness I asked her to read something to me, and she read these lines from Psalms (42:11): "Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him who is the health of my countenance, and my God."
I reasoned quickly that man was never cast down and that I was able to do what was right. The incident occurred on a Friday morning, and I went to work as usual. Though I was scarcely able to open my jaws wide enough to place a straw between my teeth, I was grateful that no one noticed it. A good part of the day I was able to be alone at my desk, and I often declared the truth that man is made in God's image and likeness and is therefore perfect. Jesus' words comforted me (Matt. 5:48), "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."
When the condition had not yielded by the end of the day, I called a Christian Science practitioner for help. He began praying for me immediately, and all pain in my jaw left that evening. The practitioner continued to help me Saturday and Sunday, and though my jaw was still out of place, my thinking was becoming clearer, and I felt uplifted. Confident that I would be all right, I went to work Monday morning. While I was sitting in at a conference taking dictation these words came to me from the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 207): "There is but one primal cause. Therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not proceed from this great and only cause." As I pondered this truth for a moment, I heard a snap, and my jaw went back into place, causing no troublesome aftereffects. Later that morning I discovered that the boil had also disappeared without leaving a mark.
