From the January 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In 1940, through no fault of mine, I lost a position which I had obtained during the depression years. Although this position was not satisfying to me, I had come to believe that it was the only one I could fill and that if I lost it, I would be unable to make a living. I was depending on matter, not on God, and as a consequence I was most fearful of losing the position.

Though I had no visible means of support and no income whatever for several months, my family and I were beautifully-taken care of. Our every need for rent, food, and clothing was met just as these things were needed.

During this period of unemployment I learned to know God better. I discovered that He really does govern our affairs if we rely on Him, let Him direct our movements, and silence human will and material desires. This Bible passage was with me constantly (Prov. 3:5, 6): "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." It was the last thing in my thoughts before I fell asleep at night, and every morning I wakened with it in thought. A thorough study of the chapter on Prayer in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy brought much illumination to me.
