"AWAKEN TO VIGOR AND TO VICTORY"

From the December 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Truth is always the victor." These thought-provoking words appear on page 380 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The sentence states a great spiritual fact, for Truth as understood in Christian Science is a synonym for God, and God is All. There is no other power to oppose infinite Truth or to contend with it. The First Commandment (Ex. 20:3), "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," sets forth the fundamental law of God. Victory over every form of evil is won through obedience to this all-powerful deific command.

After a rather prolonged physical problem, the author searched his thought to find what might be causing this delayed healing. In studying one of Mrs. Eddy's other works entitled "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany," he was spiritually awakened and completely healed as he read (p. 204), "My faith in God and in His followers rests in the fact that He is infinite good, and that He gives His followers opportunity to use their hidden virtues, to put into practice the power which lies concealed in the calm and which storms awaken to vigor and to victory."

The thought of spiritual vigor as a quality of God inspired the writer to greater effort and persistence in his mental work, which apparently had become rather a routine repetition of sacred passages from the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's works. This new impetus brought immediate results, for it released the recuperative energies of divine Mind, which are always present to heal and regenerate. The dormant understanding must be aroused in order to break the mesmeric illusion of the carnal mind. The habit of complacently listening to latent suggestions of evil is brought forcibly to our attention when we read (Prov. 6:9), "How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?"
