"THE SUPREMACY OF SPIRIT"

From the December 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"The supremacy of Spirit was the foundation on which Jesus built." So writes Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 138). This spiritual foundation was responsible for the Master's remarkable demonstrations, for it enabled him to perceive the spiritual ideas which constitute the curative elements of true Mind-healing. The spiritual ideas so successfully utilized by Jesus are still available today, and they become apparent to us as we too build on the right foundation, "the supremacy of Spirit."

Human thought has been falsely educated to accept matter as a criterion for all logic. The Science of Christianity, however, teaches us to reverse material tendencies of thought and build on the spiritual supremacy of God's allness. Spirit must replace matter as the basis of reasoning if a practical Christianity is to be demonstrated.

Trying to modify the strict demands of this requirement by the consolidation of both material and spiritual viewpoints has caused much of mankind's religious confusion. Spirit and matter are direct opposites. Therefore they can no more be reconciled than fire and water. No one can think from opposite standpoints at the same time. Christ Jesus said (Matt. 6:24): "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon."
