THE GREATEST GIFT

From the December 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In one of his parables, Jesus likens the kingdom of heaven to a pearl of great price. He tells of a man who saw such a pearl and sold all of his possessions in order to purchase it. The priceless pearl—the kingdom of heaven—is available to every individual. Indeed, it is included in his very nature, his divine sonship as a child of God.

This heavenly gift is actually the gift of life eternal, but it is not everlasting material life, with its pains and pleasures, fears, discords, and uncertainties. The priceless gift of eternal life is the continuous unfoldment of spiritual good in all creation.

Christ Jesus walked among men to show them how to find and to enjoy the pearl of great price. And our beloved Leader, the Master's faithful disciple, revealed to us in her discovery of Christian Science how we can enjoy in daily life the gift of heaven. Referring to this healing and enlightening Science, Mary Baker Eddy says (Miscellaneous Writings, pp. 252, 253): "It is the dear children's toy and strong tower; the wise man's spiritual dictionary; the poor man's money; yea, it is the pearl priceless whereof our Master said, if a man findeth, he goeth and selleth all that he hath and buyeth it. Buyeth it!"
