ERROR CORRECTED BY BASIC TRUTH

From the May 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One can awaken at any moment to the fact that life and intelligence are not material, but spiritual. In that moment it will be seen that consciousness is Mind and expresses Mind in all its manifestations.

Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 14): "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well." The sudden transition from sickness to health is a frequent occurrence in the practice of Christian Science.

The argument confronting one who is sick is that life is material and that mortal mind is the only authority on life and can dictate a verdict of life or death through its substratum, matter. This argument includes the assumption that death controls life and that therefore mortality is the master of immortality. The reverse of this argument is the truth. Matter does not originate life; life is not in the body; the functions are not material, but spiritual; therefore the argument that mortal mind and matter hold the issues of life is a myth.
