THE POWER OF MIND

From the May 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

God's self-revelation to Moses at the burning bush indicated that the creator is one Mind. For what can declare itself I AM but that which is consciousness, or Mind? Mary Baker Eddy discusses this momentous occasion in "Miscellaneous Writings" where she says (p. 258), "The name, I am, indicated no personality that could be paralleled with it; but it did declare a mighty individuality, even the everlasting Father, as infinite consciousness, ever-presence, omnipotence; as all law, Life, Truth, and Love."

Moses' glimpse of God as Mind made it possible for him to reflect divine power as he was leading the children of Israel out of Egypt. This enabled him to prove that matter is nothing more than belief and gave him power to control it in remarkable ways. When Moses and his brother, Aaron, went before Pharaoh, and Aaron's rod became a serpent, which swallowed up the rods, the emblems of power of the magicians in the Egyptian court, the authority of Mind over occultism was first demonstrated.

In this Biblical record we have an illustration for all time of the ability of divine Mind to destroy the evil machinations of the carnal mind, which Christ Jesus described as a liar and which Paul designated as enmity against God—the opposite of divine Mind. Christian Science makes a clear distinction between divine Mind and its counterfeit, mortal mind, showing the former to be real and the latter to be unreal. In every Christian Science healing, the power of divine Mind is employed to destroy the seeming power of material darkness, or mortal belief. Until mankind learn to make this distinction, they cannot intelligently solve the problems which confront them, cannot even analyze those problems properly, but will remain in a state of confusion.
