OMNIPOTENCE MEETS THE NEED

From the January 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

UNDER the marginal heading "God's allness learned," Mary Baker Eddy sets forth the basis of her discovery in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 109, 110): "The three great verities of Spirit, omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience,—Spirit possessing all power, filling all space, constituting all Science,— contradict forever the belief that matter can be actual. These eternal verities reveal primeval existence as the radiant reality of God's creation, in which all that He has made is pronounced by His wisdom good."

This great vista of spiritual being is not left as something for hereafter, or for intellectual contemplation and enjoyment; nor is it even presented to us as a spiritual possession to be cherished for comfort and encouragement apart from human experience. Mrs. Eddy unfolds the logical sequence of her discovery in these words which follow those quoted: "Thus it was that I beheld, as never before, the awful unreality called evil. The equipollence of God brought to light another glorious proposition,—man's perfectibility and the establishment of the kingdom of heaven on earth."

A dictionary defines "equipollence" in part as "equality of power, force, or signification." And "equipollent" means "practically equivalent." Since omnipotence is all power, no lesser power can equal it. Omnipotence fills all space and impels all activity. God's equipollence operates everywhere to provide power equal to meet the need. There is no situation in human experience, however forbidding, however obscure, in which the omnipotence of Spirit cannot be demonstrated as the equipollence of God—God's power adequate to the proof of His presence and of the unreality of evil.
