NO more imperative need is pressing itself upon humanity today than the irresistible demand for progressive change. "The time for thinkers has come," declares Mary Baker Eddy in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (Pref., p. vii). She continues, "Truth, independent of doctrines and time-honored systems, knocks at the portal of humanity." This knocking urges upon mankind a priceless opportunity which our Leader defines in challenging terms of awakening (ibid., p. 162): "The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind."
"A change of base"! How fraught with promise are these words for anyone in any kind of need or dire circumstance and how certain of fulfillment is this promise for those ready and willing, indeed, to change!
What kind of change? Obviously, not mere change of transient human planning, nor change for the sake of change, but an actual, conscious change in basic, individual thinking and the premise thereof. Paul expressed this need when he said (Rom. 12:2), "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." And he declared to the Philippians (2:5), "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." To the Ephesians, Paul specifically defined this spiritual demand for change (Eph. 4: 22-24): "Put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and . . . put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness."
