When I was in my teens I left home to...

From the July 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I was in my teens I left home to attend a private boarding school for girls. This move indeed proved a blessing, for through it I found Christian Science. My roommate had been a Christian Scientist all her life, but she did not mention her religion to me. She must have sensed that I would have made fun of her. While playing field hockey I was severely injured in one eye by a hockey stick. My roommate then recommended that I read the book which I had seen her reading each morning. I had no idea what the book was, but having great respect for my friend, I did as she recommended and opened "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy for the first time.

I read these words (p. 475): "Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements." And farther down on the same page I read, "He is the compound idea of God, including all right ideas." By the time I had finished reading these few lines I realized that my eye was completely healed. In a moment I had learned something of what God is and had felt His power. I was overjoyed to be rid of the pain and discomfort of the injured eye, but far beyond that was the joy which came from the realization that I had found God and that I could depend on Him for help in any situation.

Many healings have taken place since then; some through my own work, and others with the help of practitioners. There have been healings of sinus infection, chronic colds, hemorrhoids, and a fractured elbow. Displaced organs have returned to their proper place, and smoking and social drinking have been overcome. One time when it appeared that I could not rise from my bed because my legs were paralyzed, I called a practitioner. He said to me: "Why, you have merely forgotten who you are. Now, remember who you are, and I will help you." This was early in the morning, and as I lay back in bed I started to remember who I really was: a perfect child of God. I fell asleep, and when I awoke a few hours later I was able to get up and dress and be at my post in our Reading Room. By that evening I was completely healed.
