With the discovery of Christian Science there has come a need for reevaluating the mission of Christ Jesus. It has been generally granted that he gave proof of such truths as the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man, of the power of goodness and the continuity of life. But Mary Baker Eddy points out that Jesus came to demonstrate the Science of being. He revealed the law of God, His resistless will, and showed mankind how to become conscious of absolute, spiritual existence and God's government of all.
Jesus dealt with matter. He brought it under the control of God, destroyed the action of its so-called laws, and finally dispelled fully, in his own case, the corporeal senses, which produce the subjective concepts that we call matter. The Saviour's mental and spiritual dominion over matter was proof that matter is mortal belief, a limited and false way of defining substance, a willful conviction of an untruth. If matter were external to thought, Jesus could not have subordinated it by mental means. But true thought has dominion over false thought, and this he proved.
Mrs. Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 74):"Christ Jesus' sense of matter was the opposite of that which mortals entertain: his nativity was a spiritual and immortal sense of the ideal world. His earthly mission was to translate substance into its original meaning, Mind." And Mrs. Eddy goes on to show that he did this by walking the wave, turning water into wine, healing the sick and sinful, and vanquishing death. She ends the paragraph by saying, "He met and conquered the resistance of the world."
