SPIRITUAL FUNDAMENTALS AND CHURCH GROWTH

From the November 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Love for God and love for one's neighbor are fundamentals to which the earnest student of Christian Science endeavors to adhere. As he is faithful to the teachings of this Science, he gains a constantly expanding unfoldment of their significance. Christ Jesus urged the commandments (I John 4:20), "He that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?"

The Church of Christ, Scientist, founded by Mary Baker Eddy, is the institution in which students of Christian Science are able to practice love for God and neighbor and thus make available to mankind here and now the full salvation promised in the teachings of Christ Jesus and revealed in this age through Mrs. Eddy's discovery of Christian Science.

In her work "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" it is recorded that the members of The Mother Church at the 1905 Annual Meeting, in sending greetings to Mrs. Eddy, referred to her "unmeasured love for humanity," which inspired her "to welcome all mankind to the privileges of this healing and saving gospel" (p. 24).
