THE LONE BARK

From the November 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Many people speak of being unhappy when they are alone, that is, without human companionship, even temporarily. Some are fearful at these times; others, accustomed to being more or less dependent upon some person or persons, find themselves tempted to be sad or at least less cheerful than usual.

Christian Science teaches that the realization and acknowledgment of God as ever present will dispel these fears and sorrowful thoughts. However, this statement may be merely words until one has gained some understanding of what God really is. The student of Christian Science early realizes that his greatest need is to know God better. To that end, he studies, ponders what he reads, and prays for progress. Soon he finds himself rejoicing in day-to-day advancement.

Christ Jesus knew his unity with God, and he said (John 8: 16), "I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me." The Master constantly turned his students and others to God and to thoughts of God: what He is, what He does, what He knows.
