One day during the military training program in World War I, when a sham battle was staged, an officer was ordered to take his troops and occupy a certain position in the mock maneuvers. Preparations were thoroughly made, the military operations carefully carried out, and the position was properly occupied. Then the officer said to his troops: "Now you can lie down and take it easy and eat your sandwiches."
When the commanding officer came up and received a report that the position had been occupied, he replied, "Are you ready for a counterattack?" Of course he was not, because his troops were lying down and taking it easy and eating. This officer lost an opportunity for promotion because he was not ready for a counterattack.
Because of their conformity to the By-Laws regarding Sunday Schools, in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy, the beloved Leader of the Christian Science movement, our Christian Science Sunday Schools have gained and occupy a position of strategic importance in the warfare against materialism. Moral and spiritual qualities are developed through the consecrated work of Sunday School teachers and pupils who are striving to grow in the spiritual understanding of the Bible and the divine Principle it sets forth and who are studying and utilizing the Ten Commandments, the Lord's Prayer, and its spiritual interpretation by Mrs. Eddy, the Beatitudes, and the Lesson-Sermons, which are outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly.
