"THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE SHIP"

From the February 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Because of the universal belief of mankind that good is material, everyone wants his fair share and has a deep-seated feeling that he is entitled to it. All too often, however, one outlines for himself the size of the share he wants and then is tempted to use every means to get it that he can devise and that his conscience will allow. In fact, the history of the world is darkened by mankind's intensive effort to get their share of this good and in some instances at almost any cost.

The Scriptures have brought us many stories and parables, with their underlying spiritual truths, which can dispel this darkness. From Genesis to Revelation we find that the human manifestation of spiritual good is always available to those who listen to and obey God. Why, then, does the darkness seem to continue? Undoubtedly it results from accepting the belief that good is material and can be divided into units of varying size and distributed among us, sometimes by righteous labor, sometimes by heredity, sometimes by luck, and frequently by opportunism.

The disciples of Christ Jesus, as they fished in the sea of Tiberias after the Master's resurrection, needed to be corrected as to their false sense of the search for good. Note Jesus' advice to them on this point (John 21:6), "Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find."
