To the Christian Scientist who has pondered the reference made by our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, to God as "the eternal builder," the word "building" takes on a new meaning. Mrs. Eddy makes the reference in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she says (p. 428), "We should consecrate existence, not 'to the unknown God' whom we 'ignorantly worship,' but to the eternal builder, the everlasting Father, to the Life which mortal sense cannot impair nor mortal belief destroy."
Nothing is static in Truth, for Truth never ceases to unfold. The Bible states of God's mercies (Lam. 3:23), "They are new every morning." When church building has its inception in Mind, the task is impelled, sustained, and protected by Mind.
It is recounted in "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy" by Sibyl Wilbur that a publisher in Boston rejected the manuscript of our Leader's book Science and Health, a book which was destined to revolutionize the thinking of the whole world. On her return to Lynn, Mrs. Eddy turned suddenly to the young man accompanying her, and pointing to a church which they were approaching, she exclaimed (p. 203): "Do you see that church? I shall have a church of my own some day."
