From the February 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

With the hope that this testimony may help others who are searching, as I searched, for freedom from suffering, I wish to express my gratitude to God for all that Christian Science has done for me.

In 1942, while serving in the United States Army during the Second World War, I contracted a skin disease that Army doctors considered incurable. This condition, called "jungle rot," appeared at the base of my spine. I suffered for many years with this problem. Constant medication was used, and in 1953 I underwent surgery; but the operation gave me no relief from the pain.

About this time I married a young woman who was a student of Christian Science. I had been reared in an orthodox religion, and at first I was very antagonistic toward what I believed Christian Science to be. In spite of this attitude, my wife very lovingly explained how this Science could help me if I were willing to accept its teachings. One day when the pain was intense, I agreed to try Christian Science.
