The coming of Christian Science into our home was the most important thing which could possibly have happened to us, and its advent was interesting.
My mother had had the opportunity to accept Christian Science three times earlier in her life, but evidently she was not ready to do so. At one time, after passing through the utmost depths of anguish, despair, and material loss, she found herself unable to pray or to find God at all. This was shocking to her, for she had read the Bible all her life and had always been accustomed to take her problems to God in prayer and to find surcease, comfort, and guidance.
Now a terrifying blackness had settled down upon her; it seemed to envelop her whole being, and she could not use even the Lord's Prayer. In this state she decided to go to the public library and borrow Science and Health. This she did not mention to my sister and me, because she wanted to approve the book before we might read it.
