Testimonies of Healing

As a child I had a deep desire to know...

From the April 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As a child I had a deep desire to know about man's origin and his future life; so at an early age I tried to read the King James Version of the Bible. However, I laid it down as incomprehensible. The words, "In the beginning" (Gen. 1:1), gave me a sense of defeat. Later, in high school, the question, "What is God?" occupied my thought and was more important to me than academic questions. But no one to whom I turned could tell me.

Christian Science finally came to me through its authorized literature being delivered to my home after my marriage. Mrs. Eddy gives the completely satisfying answer to my question on page 465 of the textbook, Science and Health: "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." On page 502 the first verse of the Bible was clarified for me by these words: "The infinite has no beginning. This word beginning is employed to signify the only, —that is, the eternal verity and unity of God and man, including the universe."

One of my first healings in Christian Science was an instantaneous one. I had gone to bed feeling well, but later awakened hardly able to breathe. I thought of calling a physician, but wondered what he could do to help me breathe. I also wondered how I would manage until his arrival. And then the thought came to me, "Well, young woman, you have been reading about Christian Science for a year and a half, why not let it heal you?" I answered, "All right, I will."
