THE VOICE OF CONSCIENCE

From the April 1961 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THE pure understanding of God that Christ Jesus brought to the world was priceless. He addressed the people with God-derived authority. "O ye hypocrites," he said to the Pharisees, who with the Sadducees insolently asked him for a sign from heaven, "ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?" (Matt. 16:3.)

Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, also spoke with authority, the authority that divine Science provides. She states in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 237), "This period is not essentially one of conscience: few feel and live now as when this nation began, and our forefathers' prayers blended with the murmuring winds of their forest home." And then she adds, "This is a period of doubt, inquiry, speculation, selfishness; of divided interests, marvellous good, and mysterious evil."

The period in which we live is greatly in need of a voice of conscience, and this need is being met in large measure by a newspaper bearing the name The Christian Science Monitor. The Monitor admonishes impersonally. It reproves kindly, yet seriously, where necessary. It reminds people of neglected obligations and opportunities. It is a constructive and dependable newspaper for all people and is so recognized in ever-increasing measure and ever-widening circles. In fact in a recent private poll, daily newspaper editors across the nation placed the Monitor second in a list of the top fifteen newspapers which were judged to be "most superior for news coverage, integrity, and public service." In another poll it was placed third in a list of ten.
