I was introduced to Christian Science towards the end of the First World War. Brought up in an orthodox church, I frequently visited a large and beautiful church during the war to pray for the safety of relatives and others who were on active service. At one such visit I suddenly realized that instead of asking God to take care of His children, I needed to understand the nature of God; and I then prayed that I might be guided to do so. Within a week or so I saw advertised in my home town a lecture on Christian Science, and I decided to go to it. Before the lecture was half over I realized that I had found the answer to my prayer in the completely logical explanation given of the nature of God and of man.
On the following day I visited a Christian Science Reading Room and bought a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which I at once began to read. When I reached the chapter entitled "Genesis," I was convinced that the account of the creation of man as the image and likeness of God, as recorded in the first chapter of Genesis, is the true one, and that the second account, that of a man created from dust, relates to an unreal concept of the true man. I began to attend the services at a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and I have continued the study of Science and have attended the services ever since.
Ours is a practical religion. This has been proved many times in my experience. My first healing occurred soon after I began to study Science. I had believed that certain kinds of food disagreed with me and should be avoided. I partook of one of the forbidden dishes and was afterwards quite ill. Having important work to do and having no time to find a substitute to do it for me, I asked for my copy of Science and Health, which I read for several hours, and then felt quite well. Truth, though not fully understood, had completely banished the complaint. I rose and went about my work with gratitude.
