When we listen to a newscast, do we as Christian Scientists remember and perform our duty to mankind by letting divine Love alone govern our thinking? Do we at such times defend ourselves against aggressive mental suggestion? Do we watch and pray that we be not influenced erroneously?
One might ask if it would not be simpler to avoid listening to newscasts altogether and thereby shut out evil suggestions. However, it is of prime importance that the individual Christian Scientist be well informed. Naturally he chooses whenever possible to listen to the most objective and unbiased, as well as the least sensational, account available. But the answer in Christian Science is unequivocal. Mrs. Eddy states in Science and Health (p. 446), "Ignorance of the error to be eradicated oftentimes subjects you to its abuse."
Mrs. Eddy herself was in exceptional measure aware of the pressing needs of mankind. She took appropriate steps to keep abreast of the times. Not only was she widely read, but she also felt so deeply the importance of the dissemination of accurate information as the basis for an enlightened citizenry that in her eighty-eighth year she started one of the most respected and influential daily newspapers in the world today, The Christian Science Monitor.
