THE ABSOLUTE, THE ABSTRACT, AND THE RELATIVE

From the October 1962 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science the Science of being—divine Science—is absolute, and the belief of human error exists only as a suppositional, relative state of mind. Christian Science teaches that absolute Being—God and His reflection—is perfect. The earnest Christian Scientist knows that to be of the greatest value to mankind, this teaching of absolute perfection cannot remain in the abstract or apart from human usage. Its applicability to human affairs— to the relative—must be recognized and demonstrated.

This demonstration is accomplished, not through the impractical ignoring of error, not through empty wordiness, not through careless disinterest in human needs, but by persistently and intelligently furnishing proof of the nothingness of evil and of the allness of God, good. One does this by healing the ills, woes, limitations, and sins that claim to be present in human experience, by lifting one's own thought to an ever-increasing love for God and man, and by helping others to do likewise.

If we would be spiritual healers, our scientific statements must be supported by the love and compassion which the living of Christian Science brings to human hearts. Words, not supported by deeds, are confusing not only as example but as method. If one's words are not the outcome of spiritual devotion, of the healing warmth and kindness of spiritual love, they become abstractions.
