When my husband passed on, Christian Science was indeed the Comforter to me. Through the understanding that I gained of God's love for His children and of the fact that He provides all good for each one of them and is the only Mind, I have been led to make necessary adjustments harmoniously, proving that "each successive stage of experience unfolds new views of divine goodness and love" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 66).
About four years ago I was serving as a receptionist in a rest home when I suddenly became very ill. Because of the great anxiety expressed around me, I agreed to have a medical diagnosis, contrary to my desire to rely on Christian Science, and was taken to a hospital for tests. Two days later the doctor told me that the tests indicated that I was suffering from leukemia, from a cyst on the pancreas, and from other complications and that he did not believe there was any hope of my recovery.
I asked to be taken back to the rest home, and it was at this point that the friend who had originally presented Science to me arrived from California. She remained with me for twenty-five days, reporting frequently by telephone to a Christian Science practitioner in California whom I had asked to give me treatment. One night when I seemed to be entering "the valley of the shadow of death," my friend began repeating the twenty-third Psalm. When she reached the words, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death," she paused and said emphatically, "Remember, you are not stopping; you are walking right through." This helped to break the mesmerism that seemed to be engulfing me.
