One day a painful condition developed in my mouth and within a few hours had spread over my entire face. I spent most of the night in prayer, trying to realize the unreality of sickness and pain, which Christian Science teaches. During this time the thought kept coming to me that if I were not a student of Science, I would take a pain reliever and would get relief. However, each time it came I gratefully acknowledged that Science not only removes pain, but also removes the cause of pain.
I recalled many quotations from the Bible, many statements from Mrs. Eddy's writings, and several hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal. There were two messages that were particularly helpful. One is from the Bible (Rev. 21:4), "God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain." The other is from Hymn No. 134,
The thought of Thee is mightier far
Than sin and pain and sorrow are.
