ON FINDING ONESELF

From the October 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The biography "Mary Baker Eddy: A Life Size Portrait" by Lyman P. Powell includes a chapter entitled "Finding Herself." Prior to her own study of Christian Science, the writer of this article read that chapter and was impressed by the mental struggles of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. The writer seemed to be in a wilderness of false beliefs, originating in the assumption that man is a mortal living in material universe.

As she continued to read, she traced the experience of Mrs. Eddy with interest and was helped as she saw it change from a state of mental perplexity, with its attendant woes, to that state of consciousness in which spiritual light dispelled the gloom. Then Mrs. Eddy found her true identity as the child of God and her human experiences underwent a radical change. She soon gave the new-old religion, known as Christian Science, to the world.

The questions might be asked: "How did Mrs. Eddy find herself? And what was the nature of that selfhood?" In her search for truth she was seeking to find God. In so doing, she discovered her own spiritual identity. This must always be the procedure, for one can never know and understand his own true selfhood until one is able to comprehend the nature of God.
